#6 Campus Crime
Parents Express Concern after Rash of Crimes Opened Ohio State Fall Semester
In the first semester of school at Ohio State, students and parents are already having serious concerns about the student's safety on and around campus.
From the minute students started moving in, cases immediately starting popping up with robberies and some even at gunpoint.
Just to name a few specific cases:
- on August 16th, the day the students moved in there was a student reported being robbed at gunpoint.
- the next day near campus a car was highjacked.
- on August 18th, three different incidents were reported. Three students were robbed of their purses, 2 victims were approached in an attempted robbery, and then two more students were robbed later that night.
- August 21st, two students were robbed and their vehicle was stolen.
- August 22nd, a student was robbed and sexually assaulted.
The list keeps going on, on a day-to-day basis.
These students feel helpless in their own environment because of the lack of help from police in the jurisdiction. It has come to the point where they are in the process of attempting to defund the police department.
A mom of a son that attends Ohio State has asked her son to transfer because of the crime rate but he was begged to stay because of the relationships he has developed. She follows with the fact that if the crime doesn't stop and he still refuses to transfer then she will not continue to pay his tuition.
Parents are so concerned that they are having the thought of removing their children from this school in order to protect them from violence.
With all of the recent events that have happened in the last couple of weeks, the students have been sent an email that they are cracking down on security to protect their students. In the email, they confirmed that they would be adding more street lights along with security cameras to try and crack down on the crime. The parents and students understand that this is not a problem that will be solved overnight but they are just looking for reassurance that there will be a change from the police department.
